Yummy Donuts describes itself as a “mod-looking bakeshop” offering gourmet baked goods in the Dallas neighborhood of University Park. Kids will certainly take notice of the brightly colored pink and white exterior, reminiscent of either a Hello Kitty store or a happy-go-lucky candy shop. With an array of unique flavors, including red velvet, green tea, cookies ‘n mint, dulce du leche and more, could Yummy Donuts live up to the likes of Hypnotic and Glazed Donut Works? Only one way to find out…

YUMMY DONUTS REVIEW

We approached Yummy Donuts with cautious optimism since we’ve already tasted some excellent “designer” donuts in Dallas. First impressions were promising, though. The store itself is super clean and the staff just as friendly. Our 8:30 am Saturday visit was packed with young families, but according to the girl behind the counter, this was considered a “slow morning.”

PROS:

Yummy Donuts takes the cake for a spotless and fun environment. Nothing like sugary pop music coupled with pink, white and orange decor to get you in the mood for massive donut consumption.

Our spread consisted of cookies ‘n cream, birthday cake, red velvet, S’mores, blueberry cake, vanilla old fashioned, and a handful of glazed donut holes. Boy, were they pretty to look at:

Our favorite flavor would probably be the birthday cake donut, which tastes just as you would imagine–dense vanilla cake donut topped with sugary vanilla frosting and rainbow dots. It’s also just really pretty to look at:

The price for half a dozen wasn’t terrible (~$9) and the staff threw in a handful of free donut holes with our order.

CONS:

While the flavors are creative, they didn’t exactly hit the spot. We suspect this dough is pre-made and bought from another company, unlike the made-from-scratch, homemade quality of Top Pot, Glazed Donut Works, Hypnotic, and the like. Because of that, some of the flavors had an artificial aftertaste.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

We can’t say Yummy Donuts will be our go-to donut shop in Dallas, but it’s certainly a fun place to bring kids–or your SMU study group–for a sugar high. We’d be open to taste the non-donut options like coffee and “Piggies” (kolaches) too.
