Glazed Donut Works opened for business in 2013 to an eager Dallasite crowd: on day 1 they sold out completely within 90 minutes! Quirky Voodoo Doughnuts of Portland served as the muse for co-owner Darren Cameron: the long lines and fun factor inspired Cameron so much that he left the film industry and recruited friend Bill Handshy to dive into the donut business. Since 2013, donut production has ramped up, and new flavors, collaborations, and upgrades have been aplenty.
GDW’s boldness is best exemplified in its branding: pink everything and a playful “Eat Me” tagline. Don’t worry, fellas, you’re welcome to partake in the vibrant setting too. What truly sets GDW apart, though, is its commitment to scratch-made everything, a revolving menu, and extended weekend hours to serve the late-night crowds of Deep Ellum.

GLAZED DONUT WORKS REVIEW
For those unfamilar with the Big D, Glazed Donut Works is situated in the hipster Deep Ellum neighborhood. The shop recently underwent renovations to their equipment, store layout, and even donut recipes. We love the open feeling and the design details like these hanging rolling pins:
PROS:
The shop and surrounding neighborhood are fun to visit, but GDW also caters to the lazy through Favor delivery. Better yet, combine your love of drinking and donuts at the monthly LUCK at Trinity Groves pairing events. Obviously, we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing both!
Our recent in-store order consisted of vanilla bean glazed yeast, vanilla old fashioned, red velvet cake, cold brew chocolate coffee cake, S’mores, and vegan coconut:
Our favorites were the S’mores (that mondo marshmallow is made in-house!), the moist red velvet cake with cream cheese icing, and the old fashioned, which had just the right amount of crunch and buttery aftertaste. The regular vanilla bean glazed donut pleasantly surprised us too. This flavor must have been one of the recipe overhauls…while the dough is denser, it’s still sweet with flaky icing on the outside.
We also attended the August donut and beer pairing event at Luck. Check out our lovely spread:
The fuzzy navel balls had to be the best with lemon pistachio as a close second.
CONS:
While there are some pink benches outside the shop, we wish GDW offered indoor seating too. Given the neighborhood vibe and store hours, though, we understand why it was designed for more of a grab-and-go concept.
Also, the vegan donut didn’t exactly tickle our tastebuds, but we’d be willing to try another daily vegan flavor.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Glazed Donut Works’ recent upgrades were worth the wait in our opinion. With late-night weekend hours and an ongoing collaboration with LUCK Brewery, there are tons of options on when/how to get your GDW fix. We can’t wait to get our hands on the new specialty items like mini honey-bun bites and babka muffins. Also, has anyone tried their grilled cheese donut sandwiches after bar-hopping?! Thoughts and feelings are welcomed below.
In the meantime, if you’re looking to booze and nosh at the same time, check out the menu for the November donut and beer pairing event:
Case in point: pink isn’t only for chicks.
