The wait is over! Hurts Donut Company has been teasing their Frisco, TX location opening since last fall. Originally pegged for a late October, early November opening, they finally opened up shop this past Wednesday at 5:00 am. The North Texas location, run by Keith and Cheryl Selby, marks the franchise’s 11th shop and first location in the Lone Star state.
With over 80 employees, 70 varieties of donuts and an always-open kitchen, I was eager to get my hands on these colorful treats. My total trip included 50 minutes of driving and 45 minutes of waiting in line. Read on to find out if Hurts is worthy of the hype.
2019 UPDATE: Fort Worth serves as the second Texas location and a shop in Austin is coming soon.

HURTS DONUT REVIEW
Hurts Donut was founded in Springfield, Missouri in 2013 by Kas and Tim Clegg. Armed with clever marketing and crazy donut toppings, the brand has quickly expanded across 7 states and counting. Franchise owners do a great job of building buzz for grand openings: customers are encouraged to camp out the night before, and those who purchase Hurts Donut t-shirts get a fast-pass to the front of the line on opening day (plus buy one, get one free for life). Hurts Donut can be considered a family business now that Keith Selby, Uncle to co-founder Kas, opened up the Frisco location along with his wife, Cheryl.
On opening day, the store was stocked with colorful trays of donuts:
UPDATE: The Fort Worth location opened November 2018.
PROS:
Most donut shops in the DFW metroplex close by noon, but Hurts is open 24/7 and offers an impressive selection of flavors. Prices range from $1 for a glazed to $2 for most specialty donuts and $5 for the massive cinnamon rolls. Save a few bucks on a dozen donuts by letting the employees select for you. If you want to choose your own dozen, it’ll cost you $15–not terrible considering the size of the donuts and the sheer number of ingredients.
My “Dirty Dozen” consisted of Birthday Cake, the E.T. (Reese’s Pieces), Oreo Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie, Blueberry Streusel, Homer (yeast with pink icing and sprinkles), S’mores, Jesus (cinnamon sugar donut with caramel drizzle), PB&J, something with the word “Dirt” in it (chocolate cake with Oreos and gummy worms), Red Velvet, and Vanilla Old Fashioned. What a sight!
The best flavor of the bunch was hands down the Blueberry Streusel, a take on a blueberry cake donut with a crunchy exterior. The Jesus was pretty tasty too.
Another fun feature of Hurts is their Whambulance, a decorative ambulance that makes free deliveries to those who order 100 donuts or more.
CONS:
I have to say, while the donuts look great, the flavors aren’t necessarily as flavorful as you’d expect. The toppings and icing were often too sugary for my liking and overpowered the taste of the actual dough. Sadly, my teeth were hurtin’ afterward.
Least favorites were the PB&J (the jelly was off), Key Lime Pie (more gummy filling than donut…I couldn’t take more than one bite), and the Red Velvet (I prefer cream cheese frosting instead of a chocolate shell).
I can’t comment on their #1 seller, the Maple Bacon Long John, but I’d be willing to give it a try.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
The Hurts sugar rush may be worthwhile if you’re looking for:
- Late-night cravings for you
- Colorful treats for co-workers
- Fun field trip for kids
The Frisco shop offers full-size donuts, fritters, kolaches, donut holes and donut milkshakes too. While the staff is super friendly and the donuts were made fresh, I just couldn’t handle the sugar overload and aftertaste.
P.S. If you’re wondering where the Hurts Donut brand name comes from, look no further than this clip from Family Guy:
