Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending a donut and wine pairing event with Maegan of The Baker Mama (Sidenote: Maegan is the guru of simple, delicious family-friendly treats and is a fellow donut aficionado). I love how local donut shops are getting creative with their partnerships. I’ve mostly seen beer pairings and even a few dessert festivals, but I’m really waiting for a donut and coffee pairing! Here’s a recap of our time sampling Hypnotic Donuts and wine from Checkered Past Winery.
P.S. For those who follow my Instagram account, you’ll know that Hypnotic Donuts is one of my favorite shops in the DFW metroplex. Check out my initial review here. If you’ve never been to Checkered Past, the Winery itself was tricky to locate. It’s a small shop on Bellevue even though the address says Lamar Street. The vibe is intimate with a mix of rustic and modern decor. Sorry, no pics to share!
The Line-up:
- Long John filled with lemon curd and a Checkered Past white from Albarino, Texas
- Cranberry Cinnamon Roll with orange cream and a Checkered past white from Tempranillo, Texas
- Chocolate Cake with black currant and salted chocolate, along with a Dom de Boede red blend from France
- Vanilla Cake with ginger, chocolate ganache and white almond along with a Checkered Past 101 sweet red from Texas
All of the donuts were great, but my favorites were the two yeast versions. Maegan and I loved the Cinnamon Roll donut the best. That icing!
Upcoming Events
Hypnotic is upping their partnership game this year: last month they hosted a beer pairing event with Brain Dead Brewery in Deep Ellum. Recently, they announced a second donut and wine pairing with Two Corks and a Bottle on April 15.
If beer pairings are more your thing, Glazed Donut Works hosts a monthly event with LUCK at Trinity Groves. Get your tickets to the April event here. Tickets are typically around $20. Must be 21 to participate.
Hope to see you there!
