I don’t believe there even is a National Donut Council, by the way, but the story behind this day is actually pretty sweet (pun intended). The annual holiday started in 1938 as a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” of WWI, who had the coolest job of serving donuts to soldiers.
